What's the 411 on 1-800-Free411?

Are you the type to never call 411 because of the extravagant cost your wireless or landline carrier imposes? Some companies charge anywhere from $1.25 to $3.49 per call, and if you're using your wireless phone (or a metered landline phone), that doesn't include the minutes you use on that call!

Luckily, there's some relief. Actually, it's a lot of relief. It's called 1-800-Free411. It's a free, nationwide directory assistance service. While you may still be billed for the minutes you use on that call like any other call, the obnoxious $1.25-3.49 per call is entirely eliminated. So, it's just like calling a friend down the street for a number. Only, this friend has every listed business and residential number in their back pocket.

What's the catch, you might ask? At most, an additional 15 seconds of your time... that's it. 1-800-Free411 is an ad-supported service, which means that you may hear a quick advertisement or blurb when you get the number you've requested. The ads are usually related to the service you're looking for, such as one for Domino's Pizza if you happened to request a number for a pizzeria. If there's nothing related, you may not hear an advertisement at all!

I've used this service ever since I heard about it, and never went back to dialing 411 ever again. A nice feature to their service is the fact that they'll connect you directly to the party whose number you just received, and since you're making an 800 number call, the rest of that call is toll-free as well (again, minute charges from your carrier may apply like any other call). Of course, they can't give everything for free, so that call may be limited to 10 minutes. But, if you're smart, you'd have written down the number and call them yourself afterwards. It's a nice touch that they didn't have to do, but they do it, which makes using the service a lot easier.

They also have an online service where you can do your searches: residential, business by name or category, and even reverse phone lookup. However, as of today, I tried their website and everything came up "No listing." The phone service worked just fine, so their databases must not be matching up right now. Ok, so what do you get for free? Beggars can't be choosers.
